Intro to ISTE
Empowered Learner - Students leverage technology to take an
active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their
learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
- Students can customize there learning experience. A very powerful method to address this would be to run a blended learning style classroom. This blends traditional and non-traditional methods like e-learning together. An example would be: Students learn a lesson through a face-to-face lesson, then they have access to a video that explains the lesson followed by an assignment to assess their understanding of the concept. What is nice is students can learn at their own pace and can rewatch the content to better understand. The biggest plus of blended learning is students would have access to the content outside of the classroom as well.
Digital Citizen - Students recognize the rights,
responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an
interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe,
legal and ethical.
- Students will need to learn the appropriate actions when it comes to socially connect online. A workshop about online safety can be run in the classroom, explaining what cyberbullying is and how to react to negative comments. This can be ran during a technology class, or the classroom teacher can introduce this at the start of the school year.
Knowledge Constructor - Students critically curate a variety
of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
- Student need to know how to give credit to their sources and why it is important. Lessons can implement what citing is, and how to accurately cite. The website http://www.citationmachine.net/ can be used to show students how to create a citation using a great online tool.
Innovative Designer - Students use a variety of technologies
within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful
or imaginative solutions.
- Students have the ability to be creative when it comes to using technology. My students love https://code.org/ because it gives them the ability to create something uniquely their own. It also is a high-interest computer science tool that keeps students engaged as they learn to code, which is a future career in high demand.
Computational Thinker - Students develop and employ
strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the
power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.
- Students need to be able to understand how to make technology work. Codeable robots are a great tool that teaches students how sequences work within coding. They code into the robot what actions to take, and if a code does not work they are able to debug it. Robots provide lots of opportunities to integrate mathematical and engineering concepts into their coding and computational thinking.
Creative Communicator - Students communicate clearly and
express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools,
styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.
- Student presentations can involve using slide show tools. Teach students what is appropriate backgrounds, effects, and elements to have for a presentation. For example, a presentation Prezi about the Revolutionary War should not have unrelated pictures or distracting backgrounds and noises.
Global Collaborator - Students use digital tools to broaden
their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and
working effectively in teams locally and globally.
- https://www.penpalschools.com/ is a great and unique resource for collaboration. It allows a teacher to register a class and connect with other classrooms around the world. Students are able to work on a project on a teacher-selected topic with other students that are their age around the world. Students can give feedback to other students responses and learn about digital citizenship as well as they interact with others.
